California's high unemployment rate contributes to the stagnation of the housing market and reduces revenue collected by local governments, prompting more cuts to the local services that people depend on.
I continue to support legislative actions and host events in my district to create jobs. It must be our top priority.

LIVERMORE, CA—Assemblymember Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) today promoted job creation by hosting an Employment Fair at the Robert Livermore Community Center. Nearly 50 different employers from throughout the Bay Area attended the event along with experts from the Employment Development Department.
“Today’s employment fair was a tremendous success,” said Assemblymember Buchanan. “I am pleased to see that employers in the 15th District are working with the community to put people back to work in good, stable jobs.”
The event was attended by more than 500 people from diverse backgrounds. One attendee served as a church bookkeeper from Livermore for twelve and a half years, only to be let go recently because of budget cutbacks.
With two grown children and a husband who had been out of work for 14 months, she was there to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with potential employers, learn about job training resources and other information services available to jobseekers. A broad range of resources and industries were present at today’s fair including, information on technical training, veteran’s employment services and transit information. Additionally, employment specialists were available to give feedback and critiques of resumes.
“The high turnout today highlights the need to create more jobs in California,” said Assemblymember Buchanan. “With an unemployment rate of 12.5%, we must support both the business community and connect them with the unemployed. Yesterday, I was proud to co-author Senate Bill 71 that encourages investment and job creation in green technology by providing incentives for businesses to stay in California.”
